Frequently asked questions
Everything landlords and property managers ask before they start. Still stuck? Contact support.
Getting started
Do I have to get on a demo call?
No. Start your free trial and set up your first property in minutes — no calls, no sales pitch. There's also a live demo you can click around without signing up.
How long does setup take?
Minutes. Add a property, import your rent roll, and you're seeing who's paid. Most of the work is a one-time CSV import, which auto-maps your columns.
Can I bring my data over from Buildium, AppFolio, or QuickBooks?
Yes. Import your rent roll, tenants, and transactions from a CSV export — Buildium, AppFolio, QuickBooks, Wave, or a plain spreadsheet all work. Columns map automatically, and you review before anything is saved.
Do I need accounting experience?
No. The books keep themselves as you collect rent, pay bills, and sync your bank — then Doorpost produces the P&L, balance sheet, and Schedule E for you. If you can read a bank statement, you can run the accounting.
Pricing & billing
How much does Doorpost cost?
$29/month covers your first 29 doors, then $1 per door per month after that. Every feature — operations, full accounting, portals, tax reports — is included at every size. No per-add-on fees.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — 30 days free. You add a card to start it so nothing breaks if you continue, but you're not charged until day 30, and you can cancel anytime before then at no cost. Want to look first without a card? Use the live demo.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There's no contract and no cancellation fee — cancel whenever you like and you keep access through the end of your billing period.
Is there a discount for paying yearly?
Yes. Paying annually saves about 20% versus month-to-month, and early customers keep their founding price as we grow.
Features
Does it really handle Section 8 and USDA-RD voucher housing?
That's what it's built for. Every lease carries a tenant / voucher split, you can post the lump HAP payment to every subsidized tenant in one click, and Doorpost reconciles what you collected against what actually hit the bank — the part generic tools get wrong.
Does Doorpost include full accounting, or do I still need QuickBooks?
The books are built in — real double-entry, not a report bolted on. Bank and card sync with categorization that learns your merchants, P&L, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, a trial balance that actually foots, bank reconciliation, journal entries, Schedule E, 1099-NEC worksheets, and depreciation — all from the same data that runs your properties, with no separate QuickBooks bill. Straight answer on the edges: Doorpost keeps cash-basis books (the way rental owners file), and it doesn't do payroll, sales tax, inventory, or invoicing non-tenants. If you need those, keep QuickBooks for that piece.
Can tenants pay rent online?
Yes. Residents pay from their portal by bank transfer (ACH) or card — the money settles straight to your bank account via Stripe, the payment posts to their ledger automatically, and they get an email receipt. Autopay is on the near-term roadmap.
Can I manage multiple properties or entities?
Yes. Add as many properties as you like, switch between them or see the whole portfolio at once, and keep books cleanly separated when you own through more than one entity.
Is there a portal for tenants and co-owners?
Yes — residents get their own portal for balances, online rent payment, documents, e-signing, and maintenance requests. Owner statements are built into Reports; co-owner logins are coming soon.
Your data & security
Is my data secure?
Every account is fully isolated at the database level with row-level security, and your data is encrypted in transit. We never sell your information — you can read exactly what we collect in our Privacy Policy.
Can I export my data, or am I locked in?
Your data is yours. You can export it and there's no lock-in — if Doorpost isn't right for you, you can leave with your records.
Who is Doorpost for?
Self-managing landlords and small property managers who want operations and accounting in one place — and especially anyone running Section 8, USDA-RD, or other voucher and affordable housing that generic software ignores.
